Black Canyon

Gunnison National Monument

Named for its craggy rock and the minimal sunlight caused by its narrow channels, Black Canyon is a spectacular sight. It is composed of 12 miles of the rugged Gunnison River gorge. The river has a maximum depth of 2,660 feet and the gorge’s narrowest rims-north and south-span a mere 40 feet. At the monument, you will find ancient Pinion trees, scenic drives along the north and south rims, and hiking trails along the rims and descending into the canyon. During the summer there are interpretive programs and during the winter you can go cross-country skiing from Gunnison Point to High Point.
